“theyyam” is an observational documentary based on the pottan theyyam.
pottan theyyam is the idea of secularism and humane thoughts in the folklore of north Kerala.

SYNOPSIS
In Malayalam, ‘Pottan’ translates to ‘Idiot.’ Pottan Theyyam, a traditional performance art form, is believed by some to earn its name from the performer’s portrayal of godliness with a mix of sarcasm, strange humor, and intense playfulness. Despite the spontaneous and entertaining aspects of Pottan Theyyam, it is not intended as a comedic act for the audience. Instead, it represents a straightforward manifestation of Lord Shiva from Hindu mythology, aiming to convey ideas of secularism and justice to society.
During the ‘Agnipravesham’ segment of the Pottan Theyyam performance, the Theyyam artist symbolically throws himself into a pyre lit with wooden logs. While lying on the pyre, the Pottan Theyyam laughs and howls, using the act to mock social evils. The Theyyam also engages in friendly pranks with the spectators.
This ritualistic expression serves as a re-enactment of the lives of those who sacrificed themselves for social causes, embodying a form of social and spiritual satire characteristic of Shiva’s personality. The dance of the Pottan Theyyam is believed to have the power to dispel troubles and bring about health and wealth. Importantly, Pottan Theyyam transcends caste and religious boundaries, being worshipped by people from all backgrounds.
